In Memory of our Founding Member, Paul L. Gervais CPA, MT, PF
Paul Gervais, founder of Gervais & Associates, PC, passed away on March 3, 2018 during a ski trip with friends. He died suddenly and of natural causes.
Paul was inspired to create a substantial financial literacy resource for La Plata County after realizing Durango and the surrounding Southwest was severely lacking in financial wellness education for young people.  In 2012, he teamed up with Allison Andersen to form Know Your Dough and has helped it grow to become the leading provider of youth financial literacy and wellness education in La Plata County.  Before his death, Paul shared a story of inspiration that is the cornerstone of what Know Your Dough sets out to accomplish.  We share it here as a reminder and as a testimony to the great legacy that Paul leaves in his passing.

"In 1970, I was a young eleven year old excited to spend the $100 earned from my newspaper route on a pair of skis when my mom dragged me to the local bank with her as she always did on Fridays to deposit my dad’s paycheck. On the way, she said     I could buy the skis, or I could deposit the $100 in a savings account and the bank would pay me $3 for doing so. She said the bank would pay me $3 every year on every $100 I deposited. (Ah…the good ole days when skis cost just $100 and banks paid 3% interest!) After making my deposit, mom introduced me to the bank branch manager and asked him to confirm they would indeed pay me simply for depositing money. He said not only that, the bank would pay even more if I left the $3 in the account. He said it was called compound interest…..making your money work for you, so that someday you won’t have to work for your money.  As we left the bank, I asked my mom if there were other secrets about money that I should know. Mom said there were, but none of them mattered until I understood and applied this one.  Mom’s simple financial wisdom that day had a great impact on me, and is largely responsible for Know-Your-Dough.  Mom, thanks for inspiring Know-Your-Dough!"  - Paul Gervais

A family legacy

Dear Allison,
Several months ago, I pledged that when my business account
@Urban20Something reached 5000 followers on Instagram, I'd donate to a financial literacy nonprofit. I did this because: I wanted to use social media as a positive platform and it's in alignment with why I started Urban20Something in the first place- to help others save and earn more money

Of course, I had no idea when I made that pledge that I'd lose my father. Now, I'm donating to the financial education, Durango nonprofit that he founded just five years ago, Know Your Dough. I invite anyone else to join me in donating if they feel called to do so.  In the past two years, Know Your Dough was is the running for Durango's non-profit of the year award. I'm so proud of my dad for creating it and so grateful he got to see it recognized and appreciated.
